A client of mine wrote me a long thank you email today. We've been working together for the last year and a half, but before that, he had been working with another consultant.
Apparently, this other consultant rarely let him finish a sentence. He would interrupt to give his opinion and insist that my client needed to listen to his advice or his business would be ruined.
Needless to say, their professional relationship didn't last long.
In his email, my client thanked me for listening and hearing him out instead of running him over with my suggestions.
I was honored to receive this feedback, and happy that the methods we use at On Belay are working.
Our approach is a mix of coaching and consulting. Traditional coaches focus on listening and asking probing questions, without making recommendations. Consultants, on the other hand, are experts at making recommendations, but typically don't do a good job of listening.
The On Belay Way focuses on being experts at listening, while also providing expert advice.
We're not here to tell you what to do--we're here to have your back. To be a sounding board for your ideas. To be a catalyst to your growth. To free you to take risks.
Does that mean we get it right every time? Of course not. There's no such thing as flawless consulting (or coaching).
That's why we listen.
